General Insurance Essentials (GIE) Course - Salesperson/Adjuster Level 1 License

This course provides the training required by the Insurance Council of BC for anyone wanting to obtain a Level 1
Salesperson or Adjuster License. Based on the General Insurance Essentials courses of the Insurance Institute of Canada,
it introduces the student to the insurance business, insurance intermediaries, the insurance company, basic documents,
insurance practices and automobile insurance. In addition, the
course covers, at an introductory level, law and insurance, 
insurance contracts, insurance organizations, fire insurance, the Homeowner's policy, personal lines policies, liability insurance, 
commercial insurance coverage, reinsurance, risk management and loss prevention. 

Once training has been completed, the successful candidate is required to have the sponsorship (employment) of a licensed insurance agency or licensed adjusting firm in order to obtain a Level 1 licence from the Insurance Council of BC. Your results from successful completion are considered valid for a period of one year from completion date. If applicants wait longer than one year to obtain a licence, they will be required to rewrite the exam.


Successful graduates of this Program will be awarded a Certificate from the Insurance Institute of BC.
In addition, the successful 
candidate will be eligible to apply for an equivalency credit in the Chartered Insurance
Professional (CIP) designation program
of the Insurance Institute of Canada (a credit transfer fee will apply).
 

 

Important: All students must be current, registered members of the Insurance Institute of British Columbia. 
The membership fee is included in the course fee for Home Study & at Douglas College. For Camosun College students, 
please
submit a membership application prior to your course registration.

 

It is highly recommended to take the General Insurance Essentials (GIE) course by the in-class setting. GIE is offered at
Douglas College in New Westminster and Camosun College
in Victoria. Also available by

General Insurance Essentials (GIE)  
General Insurance Salesperson/Adjuster - Level 1

 

The Insurance Institute of BC is offering the General Insurance Essentials (GIE) Licensing Program via
a home study program.  This program is recommended for those employed in company, agency/broker
or adjusters offices in junior positions who want an overview of the insurance industry but with some 
detail about actual coverage's and attendant claims routines.

Total fees for the Home Study Program are $ 435.00 (includes GST), and include the following:

Course Material

Course material will be mailed to the address provided to us.  Please allow 1-2 weeks mailing.

 

Examinations

Licensing exams are held most Monday mornings at the Insurance Institute of BC from 9:30 am - 11:30 am.
Out of the lower mainland exams are set up on individual basis in your area. Please ensure that we receive at
 least 2 weeks notice in order to ensure an exam date is available.  Please call 604-681-5491, or toll-free at
 1-888-681-5491, to book your exam.

C (65-74 %) = 24 technical credits

D (60-64 %) = 24 technical credits

 

Unsuccessful grades:

X (55-59 %) = 12 technical credits

Y (40-54 %) = 12 technical credits

Z (less than 40%) = 0 credits
