Prospective Instructor Information

“Being an instructor for IIBC is one of the most stimulating and rewarding things I do.”

“It’s great to see the light go on when a student masters a new concept.”

Ask any instructor why they do it and you’ll probably get a similar response.  Helping others to learn and
move ahead in their profession is immensely satisfying.  Most instructors agree they learn as much as, or
more than, their students.  They find it’s good for their own personal and professional development – and a
good source of Continuing Education credits.

The Institute is always glad to hear from CIPs, FCIPs and others who are interested in becoming instructors.

Do you have what it takes?

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Above all, an instructor must have the motivation and willingness to learn and share knowledge and
experience.  In addition, it helps to have:

Knowledge of adult education principles and techniques

Prior experience in teaching adults

Knowledge of the course content

Personal commitment to professional development and skill upgrading

Insurance or other appropriate professional qualification

…or an equivalent combination of demonstrated knowledge and experience.

If you’re not sure, talk to the Education Coordinator or the Manager.

Time Commitment

Being an instructor means committing your time for the ten to twelve week duration of the course you teach.
Instructors are expected to:

Attend and conduct classes as specified by IIBC

Devote sufficient time to preparing lessons, setting and marking tests and the maintenance and
submission of records and reports.

Weekly preparation time varies depending on your experience and the specific course you are teaching.

Orientation and Training

The Education Coordinator provides orientation and mentoring contacts to individual instructors.  If you haven’t
taken any instructor training, the Institute will recommend a course.  In addition, IIBC provides professional
development to help keep instructors up-to-date on adult education.

Payment

You will be paid as an independent contractor who received an honorarium, not as an employee of the Institute.
