CIP PROGRAM

In-Class CIP Courses

The Insurance Institute of BC offers many CIP courses in an evening class setting. Courses include approximately
27 hours of instruction.  During the term, students will complete assignments, quizzes, and a mid-term examination,
which are combined in a final term mark.  A student's final course grade is based on a combination of the term mark
and the final examination mark.

Depending upon the number of students and the availability of instructors, not all courses will be offered in-class in all
locations. Distance Learning is available for courses not offered locally.

In-class students will be marked as follows:

Instructor's mid-term examination 60 marks

Instructor's assessment
(based on participation, assignments, tests, and attendance)

40 marks
Final Exam 200 marks

Insurance Institute of BC fee schedule

Important - Please note the following pricing details for CIP courses:

- Text books for CIP Courses are priced separately from the course tuition and exam fee. This will allow for some students

A discounted fee schedule is available for early registration. For details
refer to fee schedule.

- Marine courses are priced separately. For details on pricing for marine texts and courses please contact  the Insurance
Institute of Canada at 1-866-362-8585.

-
All evening classes are 2-½  hours in duration over a period of 11 nights (1 night per week).

- Fees for course C-11 include a one time charge by the Insurance Institute of Canada for setting up and  maintaining your
student record.

- Registration after the above noted “Standard Registration Deadline”, if accepted, will be subject to an administration fee.

To register for an evening class, please refer to Registration Procedures before completing a Registration Form.
Please note that membership with your local institute is mandatory and must be submitted prior to writing the final examination.
You can submit your membership fee on the same form as your course registration form - no need to fill out 2 forms.

IMPORTANT:  Students taking more than one course are cautioned to check the Examination Timetable
to ensure that they do not register in the same semester for two courses for which the examinations
are held at the same time.

Distance Learning

For students who may not have access to in-class instruction or prefer self-study, distance learning is an excellent way to continue
their professional development and earn a CIP designation.

Distance Learning registration fees include the examination fee and the course text.  Most courses are complete in themselves and
cover the subject as required for the final examination.  Students are advised to obtain copies of policy wordings, as these are not
provided by the Institute.

After registering, students will receive their course materials (please allow 2 -4 weeks for delivery of your course materials).
Approximately two weeks before the final exam, students will receive an Examination Timetable indicating the exam centre
address and the date and time of the exam.  Please contact us should you not receive this notice.

Instructor Information

“Being an instructor for IIBC is one of the most stimulating and rewarding things I do.”

“It’s great to see the light go on when a student masters a new concept.”

Ask any instructor why they do it and you’ll probably get a similar response.  Helping others to learn and
move ahead in their profession is immensely satisfying.  Most instructors agree they learn as much as, or
more than, their students.  They find it’s good for their own personal and professional development – and a
good source of Continuing Education credits.

The Institute is always glad to hear from CIPs, FCIPs and others who are interested in becoming instructors.

Do you have what it takes?

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Above all, an instructor must have the motivation and willingness to learn and share knowledge and
experience.  In addition, it helps to have:

bullet

Knowledge of adult education principles and techniques

bullet

Prior experience in teaching adults

bullet

Knowledge of the course content

bullet

Personal commitment to professional development and skill upgrading

bullet

Insurance or other appropriate professional qualification

…or an equivalent combination of demonstrated knowledge and experience.

If you’re not sure, talk to the General Manager.

Time Commitment

Being an instructor means committing your time for the ten to twelve week duration of the course you teach.
Instructors are expected to:

bullet

Attend and conduct classes as specified by IIBC

bullet

Devote sufficient time to preparing lessons, setting and marking tests and the maintenance and
submission of records and reports.

Weekly preparation time varies depending on your experience and the specific course you are teaching.

Orientation and Training

The General Manager provides orientation and mentoring contacts to individual instructors.  If you haven’t
taken any instructor training, the Institute will recommend a course.  In addition, IIBC provides professional
development to help keep instructors up-to-date on adult education.

Payment

You will get paid for your time.  Not as an employee of the Institute, but as an independent contractor who
receives an honorarium.
